A local Glenn County boy, Ruland Hardy, Jr., graduated from Orland High School in 1937. He and 12 other men from Glenn County headed to Sacramento to voluntarily enlist in the army in January 1941. At Ford Ord in Monterey he was assigned with the 75th Field Artillery Battalion Company “C.” His story as a “horse soldier” is the cover feature of this Fall 2023 edition of the historical journal, Wagon Wheels. Ruland Hardy, Jr. is the third soldier from the left, riding his horse and holding two reins on the left cassion. Photograph taken by L.S. Lewis.
